Introduction

In Cyprus, EU requirements on cadmium are transposed into national law. The legislation has been laid down to protect the environment from cadmium contamination. Part of this legislation has direct relevance for products imported into the EU. This document describes these product-related legislative requirements:

  1. Cadmium restriction applicable to all products and product parts where cadmium is used to (1.1) colour specific materials, (1.2) stabilize specific materials, (1.3) plate specific products

  2. Cadmium restriction in packaging materials

  3. Cadmium prohibition in electrical and electronic equipment
In Cyprus, restrictions applying to chemical constituents of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) are set forth in the Regulation (Administrative Act) 668/2004 published in Official Gazette No. 3888, Annex III (I), on 30 July 2004. The Regulation implements both the RoHS Directive and the WEEE Directive. The Regulation is being administered by the Environment Service of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment. The key provisions of the Regulation relating to chemical restrictions are discussed in this report.
Cyprus has also adopted legislation implementing Directive 76/769/EC, which imposes marketing and use restrictions in respect of certain dangerous chemical substances. This legislation is reviewed very briefly below.

Defined Restrictions:
All articles: prohibition
All plated articles: 0.025% of the galvanisation
Packaging: 100 ppm for sum of heavy metals
Electronics: 0.01%
