Introduction

Under the Massachusetts Appliance Efficiency Standards Act ("the Act"), manufacturers must ensure that certain new appliances meet energy efficiency standards and must certify and mark these products as being in compliance with the standards. External power supplies are one of the product classes to be regulated under the amended Act; they are exempt from the certification requirement.

Massachusetts has adopted an "environmentally preferable products" ("EPP") procurement policy that requires government entities to purchase only computers that have earned at least a bronze rating using the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool ("EPEAT"), which in turn requires compliance with the applicable Energy Star efficiency standard.
