Luxembourg Summary

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (2,586 sq. km; approximately 462, 690 inhabitants) is an independent sovereign State, forming a constitutional monarchy. There are no elections as the monarch is hereditary.

The countries legal system is based on a civil law system. Following popular elections to the Chamber of Deputies, the leader of the majority party is usually appointed prime minister by the monarch.

Luxembourg became one of the six founding countries of the European Economic Community (later the European Union) in 1957.

Current environmental issues are air and water pollution in urban areas and soil pollution of farmland.
