Greece Summary

Greece (131,940 sq km; 10,623,835 inhabitants) is a parliamentary republic. Environmental legislation is promulgated by the Ministry of the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Work. The Ministry is the main body responsible for the development and implementation of environmental policy in Greece. The administration of the Ministry consists of the General Directorate of the Environment, the Division of Environmental Planning, the Division of Atmosphere and Noise and the Division of Physical Planning. The two former Divisions are further divided into sections covering the following environmental areas: inland waters, nature, wastes, environmental impacts, risk assessment, air quality, combustion and fuels, traffic and noise.

Greece's main objectives are to promote sustainable development, preserve the ecological balance and upgrade the quality of life. In order to improve the reliability of environmental information and its dissemination to implement environmental policy in accordance with Greek laws and EU regulations and directives, the Ministry is currently implementing a national Environmental Information Network (EDPP) and creating a National Environmental Agency.
