Italy Summary

Italy (301,230 sq km; 57,634,327 inhabitants) is a republic. Environmental legislation is the competence of the Ministry for the Environment.

During the 1990s, the Ministry of Environment received increasing responsibilities and monitoring power. Issues currently addressed include air and water pollution from industrial emissions and effluents, and inadequate industrial waste treatment and disposal facilities.
