Portugal Summary

Portugal (92,391 sq km; 10,066,253 inhabitants) is a republic. Environmental regulation is issued by the Assembly or by the Ministry of Towns, Territorial Planning and Environment (on delegated powers by the Assembly). The Institute of Environment (Instituto do Ambiente), an agency of the Ministry, is responsible of coordinating, planning, studying, and providing technical and regulatory support, on environmental issues. The Ministry also operates through the Water Institute, the Institute for the Conservation of the Ecology, and the Waste Institute.

Portugal’s policy making is based on the principles of sustainability, integration, equity, and consultation. The Institute of Environment is elaborating a National Strategy for Sustainable Development (ENDS). The improvement of the quality of the environment, sustainable production, and the efficient utilization of natural resources towards a more informed and collaborative society, are some of the topics that will be addressed by ENDS.
