UK Summary

The United Kingdom (244,820 sq km; 59,511,464 inhabitants) is a constitutional monarchy. Environmental policy is formulated at the national level by the central government. The main regulatory bodies are the Department for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, the Environment Agency for England and Wales, and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

The UK is increasingly focusing on environmental concerns as a key aspect in a general sustainable development strategy, and integrating environmental concerns in decision-making on different levels and in different areas. Main concerns are air quality, chemicals, waste, and recycling. For these key areas, specific strategies have been devised.
