Czech Republic Summary

The Czech Republic (78,866 sq km; 10,272,179 inhabitants) is a parliamentary democracy. Environmental legislation is the responsibility of the national Ministry of the Environment.

Main environmental concerns are air and water pollution presenting health risks, and acid rain damage. The Czech Republic has made very little progress towards the transposition of the EU environmental legislation, with water and waste sectors especially requiring improvement. In 1999 however, the government adopted the State Environment Policy that places a greater emphasis on integrated sustainable development.
