Denmark Summary

Denmark (43,094 sq km, 5,336,394 inhabitants) is a constitutional monarchy. The Ministry of Environment and Energy is responsible for environmental policies. Denmark is very environmentally conscious, i.e. it is among the first European states to introduce a CO2 tax (1993) and publishing reports on the state of the environment every 4 years. Apart from the 1973 framework act, the Environmental Policy Act and its amendments and additions, Denmark has adopted action plans in many areas such as waste, clean technology and energy. Danish environmental policy is gradually shifting towards preventive programs and product oriented environmental initiatives.
