Introduction

This report provides an overview of the legislation of Italy that imposes take-back obligations with respect to waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).

In 2002, the EU adopted the first take-back requirements for WEEE through Directive 2002/96/EC of 27 January 2003 on waste electrical and electronic equipment, also known as the "WEEE-1 Directive."

In 2012, the EU adopted an amended WEEE Directive, Directive 2012/19/EU of 4 July 2012 on waste electrical and electronic equipment, also known as the "WEEE-2 Directive." The WEEE-2 Directive must be transposed by Member States by 14 February 2014.

Italy transposed the WEEE-2 Directive through the Legislative Decree 49/2014 (the "WEEE-2 Act"). This transposition appears to be consistent with the WEEE-2 Directive.

For take-back requirements for batteries and packaging, see the Country Reports for Italy on batteries and packaging, respectively.
