India's battery regulations are limited to requirements specific to lead-acid batteries. India's battery specific law is the Batteries (Management and Handling) Rules, 2001 (Battery Rules), which provides for management and handling of lead-acid batteries. At this time, no specific laws exist for sustainable management and handling of other types of batteries, except in relation to transportation where certain other types of batteries are also covered under the Motor Vehicles Rules, 19881 and under the Eco-mark Scheme. It is worth noting that the Battery Rules, as well as the ecomark criteria described below, may provide insights to companies as to the likely approach to battery chemistry specific laws, should the Indian government decide to expand the Battery Rules to other chemistries.
