Pursuant to the European Union's adoption of the Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS), various countries are developing similar measures. Where they exist, such guidelines emphasize the minimization of the use of six specified hazardous materials (i.e., Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), Polybrominated biphenyls and Polybrominated diphenyl ether) in the manufacture of various types of electronic and electrical equipment.

India has incorporated the RoHS principles in the E-Waste Rules.

Under the E-Waste Rules, every producer of IT and telecommunication equipment and consumer electronics is required to ensure that such products do not contain lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). However, a maximum concentration value of 0.1% by weight in homogeneous materials for lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) and of 0.01% by eight in homogeneous materials for cadmium is permitted. The RoHS targets were required to be achieved by May 1, 2014. RoHS targets are not applicable to goods manufactured and placed in the market prior to May 1, 2014.
