The National Environmental Policy (NEP) emphasizes on the need to promote cleaner technologies and innovation in the manufacturing processes. The National Manufacturing Policy also stresses on environment sustainability, particularly through green technologies, energy efficiency, and optimal utilization of natural resources and restoration of damaged/degraded eco-systems. However, not many laws and regulations have adopted this principle of environmentally sound design and manufacture of electronic products.

The Energy Act, being one of its kind, encourages manufacturers to adopt technologies and product designs that promote energy efficiency. For four electronic products, including, air conditioners, tubular fluorescent lamps, frost free (no-frost) refrigerator and distributor transformers mandatory standards for energy efficiency have also been framed, including star rating. BEE has also formulated voluntary standards for various other products, including television, ceiling fans, washing machines, induction motors, laptops and notebooks, etc. The campaigns and schemes launched by BEE for the purpose of energy conservation are relevant and the same have been discussed in the section titled 'Energy Efficiency'. The idea is to encourage the sales of the energy efficient products in the market and also to educate the customers regarding the energy efficiency of their electrical appliances.
