Used or discarded electronic products may be subject to regulation as hazardous wastes in Illinois to the extent that they exhibit hazardous characteristics. Illinois' Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act bans all televisions, computer monitors, desktop and notebook computers, and printers from being disposed in landfills effective January 1, 2012. Note, however, that the same law also excludes covered electronic devices and eligible electronic devices, as defined, from classification as hazardous waste, household waste, solid waste, or special waste if (1) the items are being collected, recycled, or processed for reuse; and, (2) if allowed under federal and state laws or regulations.
